Caeser and Rome

Rome and western history are inevitably linked.  Rome was the most influential civilization in human history and at one stage a 1/4 of the worlds population lived under its influence.

Rome was a true empire with the focus on the glory and power of Rome at all costs.  It was cruel, unjust, dangerous and unstable.  But amongst all that we found sheer brilliance.   Rome had some truly amazing emperors, and some names that will forever live in infamy such as Nero and Caligula. I believe that what we believe about the former is more bad press than any truth.

Caesar the name of the first true emperor of Rome was by all accounts simply brilliant.  His victory at Allisa, is still today considered one of the greatest in recorded history, 40,000 Romans defeated 250,000 Gauls.  He once and for all stamped his authority and therefore Rome's on Gaul.

But to leave it there does not give a true volume of the man.  He realized and quite rightly that for Rome to prosper it needed one ruler.  The Senate was fractured and decisions took to long to make.  It was corrupted by power and greed.  Those ruling families ruling for their own benefit not the empires.

Ceaser saw all of this and for his beloved Rome he decalred himself emperor.  Now we all know this ended with his murder on the steps of the forum.  But the die had been cast.  After his death Caesar was declared a God by the very people who watched him killed.  I could go into depth hear about the tearing down of the power of the senate, the revenge wrought on Caesar's enemies but that ignores the great that followed.

Rome was forever destined on the path it followed from Allisa.  Through its strengths, civial wars and power struggles it was the dominate force on earth.  It encouraged art, engineering, peace and justice.  Not a justice we would understand but a justice of the times.  To be a citizen of Rome was truly something, it meant you protection in your travels and a right to be a senator.

Rome, was a military state by any measure, its armies staggering in complexity and size for its age.  It could take defeat and move another army into place with ease.  Rome looked after its soldiers, these men were professionals paid to be soldiers not soldier farmers.  Their alliegence was to the Emperor and Rome.

We will never see and empire like it again, run by slaves peace kept by Roman military domination, the rule of law and summary justice.  We have moved on, today our empire spreads across the world.  Its an empire of the free, and free speech is defended to the last breath.  I am of course talking about the internet.

You me and everyone else have created the greatest community on earth, its free flexible and takes on all who come her way.  Each threat is consumed by the sheer weight of the community globally.  For ever hacker there are 500 who will go to battle with him.  Its a true global empire made of data, and it promotes free ideas and unrestricted trade.  We are truly lucky
