Bull Terrier

The following information was provided as part of Bo's information pack.  I remember reading this years ago, and unfortunately I do not know who to reference this work to, other than to say I think it sums up the breed wonderfully.  If there are typographical errors I apologize in advance as I am re typing this document.

Our Bo Baby

Over 150 years ago the "sportsmen" of the day set about breeding a fighting dog.

In the beginning they crossed the English Bull Dog with various Terriers, their objective was to combine the strength and immunity to pain of the Bull Dog with the speed and fire of the Terrier, the first progeny being know as Bull Terriers

Around this time (1840-1850) dog fighting was a fashionable "sport", Since then the Bull Terrier has been put to every use and abuse in his development to the more elegant and refined animal of today.

Physically, the  Bull Terrier of today is the supreme athlete of Dogdom, often referred to as the Gladiator of the Canine Race.  Stronger and more powerful than anything capable of comparable speed and faster and more agile than any other of like size and strength.

Bull Terriers can be pure white with colored marking on the head acceptable, brindle and white, red and white or tri-colour.  The average male would weigh 27Kg to 32Kg and females 22Kg to 27 Kg.

The Bull Terrier DOES NOT fit into every home, and whilst no longer the fighting machine of his predecessor's he still retains some of the fighting instincts passed down from them.  These instincts vary from one dog to another, in some they may appear to be dormant, however very rarely will a mature animal back away from a fight and so they must be taken for walks under strict supervision, always on a lead.  While the male Bull Terrier may get on well with a female do he may not tolerate another male. - so you have been warned.

However , whilst their temperament may vary towards other dogs, it very seldom varies with humans, especially with small children and here the "Bullie" excels.  His devotion to the family borders on the incredible.  Their keen intelligence and uncanny sense of judgment  coupled with a delightful sense of humor and a sincere carving for human affection makes them one of the most loved pets.  They are very good with children, particularly when raised with them, they are always ready for a game and have endless patience with children and will take a lot from a chi;d without losing their cheerfulness.  They are energetic and vigorous and deed direction  when playing with small children as unintentionally they might hurt or frighten a little one.

The make excellent watch dogs their formidable appearance with a look of inscrutable watchfulness and poised dignity make them a natural in this area.  Bull Terriers are not inclined to be malicious and an unprovoked attack is almost unknown.  Rarely a barker he seems to sense  when a situation calls for action.  Rest assured that if protect you he must he will do so until he can no longer move.
