Linux Install Update

Wow, is all I can say.  The software is finally installed and working, some 11 emails to tech support and struggling to get my head around why things were not working.  If linux has one fault when it comes to these things its that it is very complicated.  Each step in the process showed up because something had not been thought about in the previous step, so we were lurching from one error to another.

Most of this can be countered however with a more comprehensive how to for the install of the vendor software.  Things like make sure you have all the updates installed, make sure you set your static IP in advance of any install, make sure you disable SElinux and the correct way to do that.  I have learnt about iptables and how to work those and firewall exceptions that are actually separate.  All in all have accumulated a large amount of data on how linux workings are different to windows.

As per the last post if you have no desire to ever go to a command prompt for anything linux is still not the best solution for you.  Ubuntu and Fedora make great user desktop versions of linux, but you can still be caught out with the need for drivers for printers and all sorts of small things that could see you going to the shell to enter commands.

I am not saying not to give linux a go far from that.  What I am saying is that you will have a bit to learn.  What you will get by using linux is a stable safe and secure operating system that doesn't need booting every 5 minutes.  You will get a mind boggling array of programs that you can install for nothing including word processors etc.  And of course most importantly that smug feeling knowing that Microsoft isnt getting any more of your money,

The key to using linux is getting support from the community, there are a lot of very knowledgeable people out there who love to help.  So I suggest joining the support forum for which ever version you decide to try.  Some have support available by chat for a more instant reply and some you can even get paid support.  We would not be trying to use linux if it did not offer ours situation huge benefits that you simply cannot get from windows, or in our case is so cost prohibitive there really is no other solution.

All in all for us linux got a 9 out of 10 and windows a 5 out of 10, so the choice was simple.
